WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate will hold a crucial test vote next week on legislation that would pair new policies at the southern border with wartime aid for Ukraine and other American allies, leaders pressing ahead despite heavy skepticism from Republicans and some Democrats. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said he will set in motion a test vote on the national security package for Wednesday. “Our southern border is in urgent need, in urgent need, of fixing,” Schumer said in a floor speech. The Senate readied to proceed towards a vote next week, but widespread support from Republicans, especially House Speaker Mike Johnson, remained doubtful. Many Senate Republicans have declined to offer support for the bill until they can dig into its details.

Chris Murphy, a key negotiator on a possible border deal, said Sunday that text of a border compromise could be ready go to the Senate floor next week, saying that negotiators are finishing the text. This bill could be ready to be on the floor of the United States Senate next week. Murphy said he was pleased to see President Joe Biden support the emerging deal. Murphy also pushed back on Republicans who argue Biden already has the necessary tools to manage the US southern border. “Republicans have said openly they want to pass border and immigration reform,” he said.

Chris Murphy on Sunday said he was open to placing conditions on any aid to Israel, with the aim of reducing civilian casualties in Gaza. “We regularly condition our aid to allies based upon compliance with US law and international law. “I do believe that the level of civilian harm inside Gaza has been unacceptable and is unsustainable,” he said. “Hopefully, Hamas will accept the conditions that have been laid down that will allow for more hostages to be released. The surprise deal, which would join the venerable PGA Tour and a rival Saudi-funded golf start-up, LIV, was announced in June. The Saudi sovereign wealth fund, called the Public Investment Fund, or PIF, is controlled by the Saudi government. The Saudi Embassy did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the subpoena, which names the Public Investment Fund's New York-based U.S. subsidiary, USSA International. This summer's announcement of the PGA-Saudi golf deal ended a legal battle between the two rivals. Blumenthal said available public records indicate the Saudi sovereign wealth fund has expanded its investments in the United States from $2 billion in 2018 to $35 billion now.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal is moving ahead with new legislative efforts to combat telemarketing scams that have raised millions of dollars while pretending to represent political and charitable causes. Blumenthal announced on Monday a new oversight and legislative fight to take on those that use telemarketing calls, online scams, and other schemes to effectively steal millions of dollars from donors. Contributors think they are donating to real causes but they're tricked into giving to fake organizations, with their leaders ending up keeping the money for themselves. The Connecticut Democrat's first step was to send letters to the chairs of the Federal Election Commission and the Federal Trade Commission as part of his larger inquiry. He wrote a similar letter to FTC chair Lina Khan.

Blumenthal pointed to the fact that initial agreement between the PGA and LIV Golf has a broad non-disparagement clause. Blumenthal cited this record in calling out the PGA for selling out for the LIV merger. New York CNN Business —Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy is calling on the federal government to investigate national security concerns raised by Saudi Arabia’s role in Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter. The Connecticut Democrat urged the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, known as CFIUS, to conduct an investigation into the “national security implications” of the Saudi involvement. Even though Musk already closed his takeover of Twitter late last week, it may still be subject to national security review. Earlier this month, Twitter shares dropped after Bloomberg News reported Biden officials are in early discussions about possibly subjecting some of Musk’s ventures to national security reviews, including the Twitter deal. “We do now know of any such conversations,” National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said in a statement on October 21.
